There are plenty of resources about sharpening out there (in books and online), but I thought I would show my home-made grinder and tool rest in action through the medium of motion picture.
A roughing gouge is relatively simple to sharpen; you just set the angle of the rest to 45-ish degrees (depending on which book/blog you’ve read) and then swivel the gouge on its long axis (like turning a screwdriver).
I use a 150 grit wheel and this is good enough to get the tool back to work.
