I picked up some soft maple for the main body of the lingerie chest. The dimensions of the chest are 18″ wide by 12″ deep and 3.5 feet tall, based on the corner of the room in which it will stand.
I cross-cut the boards to length ensuring the less attractive faces were either on the inside of the carcass, or in the waste pile. The rough lumber was then face and edge planed in preparation for lamination – pairs of narrow boards are joined together to a width required for the dresser. Once laminated, the pieces are then face-planed once more.
Using hand tools to prepare boards for a project takes a lot of time, especially in the heat of summer. But the quicker it gets done, the quicker I reach the more interesting aspects of the build.
